Finding the Right Book

Screen shot 2010-11-07 at 9.07.57 PMI have added a new link on the right side of my blog for a website called Story Snoops . This is an excellent site for kids and parents to use to find book reviews for children’s books.  Input a favorite topic, author, title, or genre to find a book meeting your interests. Use the browse feature to get a taste of what books the site has reviewed. Under the Featured Books section, one can see book covers and a short summary of newly added titles. A popup next to each book cover shows the appropriate reading age, genre, title, and author. Clicking further leads to a longer summary, list of key words for the book, the scoop (comments from the point of view of a parent), and links to other books with the same key words. A quick find feature lets you input just one item like a theme or genre to come up with a list of books to enjoy. What a wonderful  tool for reluctant readers, or anyone who likes to find “the right book.”   You should check it out!

THIRD GRADE TO GO ON FIELD TRIP

When: Tuesday, October 5, 2010

We are going to the play “The Legend at Sleepy Hollow”  at the LeTourneau University’s Belcher Center.

Join Ichabod Crane, Brom Bones, the lovely Katrina Van Tassel, the residents of Tarry Town and oh yes, the Headless Horseman, as they live the story made famous by the legend. This autumnal classic is faithful to the original story written by Washington Irving in 1819 and will thrill and perhaps chill (but not too scary) your audiences. No fall is complete without the telling of stories and our retelling of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is one story you won’t want to miss. Great for grades K-6.

Permission slips due this Friday, September 24, 2010.  Money $3 cash, due Friday October 1, 2010.

More information to come.

Johnny Appleseed Day

Wednesday, September 29th, we are celebrating John Chapman’s Birthday (Johnny Appleseed) !

We have some fun activities planned in all areas of curriculum (even art!)  It has the potential to be a fun filled day of learning 🙂

Don’t forget to bring your apple items to school by Tuesday, September 28th.

Math Fact Practice

We are starting up our math fact practice program.  Or more commonly refered to as “Rocket Ship”.  Students are given an individual goal based on how fast they could write some numbers down in a minute.    That goal pertains to how many problems out of 40 they need to get correct in a minute.  Below is an example of how the math fact practice will be done in class.  If a student does not meet his or her goal then we ask them to practice at home for five minutes.  We will test Tuesday-Friday, with a two minute test on Monday.

International Space Station

Guess What!!

The International Space Station is passing through East Texas. At least in the sky. The best time to see it will be Tuesday , September 14, at 8:02 pm NNW to ESE. The space station will be a moving, solid, bright light. You can also see it Wednesday, September 15, at 8:32 pm.

You should check it out!
